As falls creeps in, it is time to give your lips some loving. I cant seem to have enough of them! I keep one in my purse, one on my desk, one in my yoga bag, one on my nightstand. Does that happen to you too?!

Unfortunately, the popular lips balms out there like Carmex, Chapstick, and Blistex contain many ingredients that can cause dryness and irritation, like menthol, phenol, and camphor. Right after you apply these type of lip balms you feel a soothing effect but they quickly dry up and require re-application.  In addition you may find alcohol, salicylic acid, fragrances and “natural flavors”; ingredients that may cause some people discomfort.

Lip Balms are supposed to seal moisture in and protect your lips from dry air and cold temps. Dryness leads to chapped lips that could progress to cracks, redness and bleeding. So why add insult to injury?

On top of that we can’t avoid ingesting them either, so you might as well choose one that will be beneficial to your overall health. Petroleum Jelly on your lips while sipping your tea? If the petroleum jelly becomes contaminated during the manufacturing process, possible PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and other carcinogenic agents may lurk into it.

So what is a girl to do to keep her lips moisturized and safe? Check out my fave ones that are really great alternatives to the Chapsticks of the world and will make your lips kissable in minutes:

SW Basics Cinnamon Lip Balm $4
Ingredients:
Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Essential Oils (Cinnamon)
Why I love it? Just like in my food, I want few ingredients in my skincare and with only 4 effective ingredients it fits the bill. It also transports me to my childhood, summers at the beach applying 100% cocoa butter to soothe my sun damaged lips, and my sisters’, my cousins’ – you know that Grandmas know best. The hint of cinnamon is a bonus!

Waxelene $6.23

Organic GMO-free soy oil, natural & unbleached raw beeswax, natural vitamin E oil and organic rosemary oil.
Why I love it? Waxelene is the petroleum jelly alternative that actually allows your skin to breathe. You can use it on your lips, a minor cut, a minor burn, your ears to protect from the harsh cold, around your nose when is irritated from a cold, quickly tame flyaways, and everything else you used Vaseline for.
