Say no to Microbeads with these safer alternatives

Whether you like President Obama or not, we can agree that signing the Microbeads bill on December 28th to save the water and sea life was a cool move from his part. I am still waiting on his promise of labeling foods and you can catch him here saying so, but that’s a topic for a different post.

The Truth about Make Up Cleansing Wipes

Make Up cleansing wipes have become really popular because they help to remove make-up or to freshen up in a cinch. They are also easy to carry in your purse, gym bag, or while traveling. A few swipes and you are feeling clean and refreshed.

What’s lurking in your cosmetics?

On a typical day, I use at least 10 personal care products: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, face cream, loose powder, mascara, tinted lip balm, blush, and nail polish. According to the Campaign for Safe cosmetics, American women use an average of 12 personal care products a day, resulting in exposure to more than 126 unique chemicals. Scary, huh?

CAP Beauty: A Green Beauty Boutique

There are food stores, health stores, and even cosmetic stores that carry a few lines of clean make up and skincare. They are always mixed with their toxic counterpart and the staff is never informed about the ingredients or the application. There’s hardly a store that dedicates its entire inventory to "clean beauty". To fill in this gap, CAP Beauty, once only an online store, opened its doors this year.

Pumpkin Season is here!

Sonoma, California

pumpkin Pumpkin season is here! They are just not for carving or eating at Thanksgiving dinner anymore. Pumpkins are packed with powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory qualities to help rejuvenate your skin. It is no wonder that many beauty companies are using pumpkin as one of their main ingredients these days.

As per the International Dermal Institute, some of the key benefits are:

  • Increased cell turnover, since pumpkins are packed with fruit enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) that brighten and smooth the skin.
  • Pumpkins contain antioxidant Vitamin A and Vitamin C that help soften and soothe the skin and boost collagen production to prevent those terribly unwanted signs of aging.
  • Pumpkin seeds are high in essential fatty acids and Vitamin E, which are necessary to maintain good barrier function of the skin. They also regulate sebum, so it’s great for oily skin.
  • Since the molecular structure of pumpkin is small and it can penetrate deeper into the skin when used topically, it gives great results for dull complexions, aging skin, and pigmentation.

Where can you find pumpkin besides the produce section at the market?

If you are into DYI like me, grab a small pumpkin to make a revitalizing hair and face mask. Save the seeds for a treatment from the inside out. Dr. Mercola recommends eating seeds raw to preserve the healthy fats present in the seeds. Click here for some tips from Dr. Mercola.

PUMPKIN FACE MASK

OILY SKIN

¼ cup fresh pumpkin meat

1 teaspoon pumpkin seed oil

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Combine all the ingredients and blend it together in a food processor. Apply the mixture to your face and leave on for 20 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water.

PUMPKIN HAIR MASK

½ cup pureed pumpkin

¼ cup of natural plain yogurt

2 tablespoons of honey

An excellent conditioner for dry hair, this recipe will make your hair shiny and soft. Combine the ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. Apply the mask through your entire hair (all the way from the roots to your tips.) Put on a shower cap and leave on for about 30 minutes. Rinse off well with lukewarm water. Style as usual.

Hope you like these ideas and don’t forget to eat and beautify in season. Nature knows best!

Cleaning Up Your Act

It’s truly shocking the amount of chemicals found in personal care products these days. The average woman uses 12 products a day and the average man uses 6 products. 80% of the chemicals in those formulations have NEVER been tested for safety.  We find refuge in words like Natural, Herbal, Pure, and even Organic, but unless it is certified Organic, all these words do NOT mean anything at all.

A Green & Stress Free Mother's Day

I asked Mommies to be, New Moms, Experienced Moms, Young moms and Older moms what they wanted as a Mother’s day gift. They all agreed with one thing– They want pampering, they want a moment to themselves, a stress free day with the family, or some “ME  time” – whether it is at a spa or at home with a mask on their face, a glass of wine, and a good book. Yes, jewelry, purses, and shoes were some of the coveted gifts, but nothing was as obvious as – "I need some time for myself"!
